Puerto Viejo de Talamanca

The lively heart of the coast

Reggae, surf, bicycles and the smell of coconut rice: Puerto Viejo is where the southern Caribbean gathers. The town sits right on the sea, with a lively main street, a famous reef break for experienced surfers, and an Afro-Caribbean heritage you can taste in its food.

Places to stay range from apartments and cabins in town to jungle villas and vacation rentals on its quieter edges, where the nights are dark and the forest is loud.

Playa Cocles

The surf beach just south of town

Long, open and backed by jungle, Cocles is the coast’s best-known surf beach, a short ride south of Puerto Viejo along the coastal road. Surfers come for the waves, and the wide sand makes for long walks at sunset.

Villas, boutique rentals and family houses sit just off the road or tucked into the forest behind the beach, many with terraces made for eating outdoors.

After a day in the waves, dinner at your villa means no evening drive back into town, and breakfast before an early surf works well here too. Private dinners, breakfast & coffee and pantry setup are all available in Cocles.

Playa Chiquita

Quiet coves, deep jungle

Further south, the coast turns quieter. Playa Chiquita is a string of small, jungle-backed coves, where the forest comes right down to the sand and the loudest sound at dusk is usually the howler monkeys.

Rentals here are mostly jungle houses, cabins and villas set back among the trees, chosen by people who want privacy and green all around them.

It’s a place people come to slow down, and one Julián knows well: he first came to the coast to cook here, as sous chef at Hotel Aguas Claras. Dinner on your terrace with only the forest for company, breakfast without leaving the house, a kitchen stocked before you arrive: all three services are available here.

Jungle-backed bay on Costa Rica’s southern Caribbean coast

Punta Uva

Calm water, jungle to the sand

Punta Uva is known for calm, clear water and jungle that runs almost to the shoreline. On quiet days the sheltered water is ideal for an easy swim, and the beach feels a world away from town.

Its villas and vacation rentals are spread along the coastal road and back into the forest, and many feel wonderfully secluded, with little more than birdsong and the sea for neighbors.

That seclusion is exactly why guests book in: no dark roads after sunset, and a stocked kitchen waiting when they arrive. Private dinners, breakfast & specialty coffee and pantry & grocery setup are all available in Punta Uva.

Manzanillo, Limón

The village at the end of the road

Manzanillo, Limón, Costa Rica is the small Caribbean village where the coastal road ends, beside the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge. Reef, rainforest and a slower rhythm: trails lead from the village into the refuge, and evenings are quiet and dark.

Stays here are mostly cabins, beach houses and jungle rentals in and around the village, plus villas along the road between Punta Uva and Manzanillo.

It’s the farthest point of our route from town, so dinner in means no one drives back after dark, and the evening stays easy. We cook private dinners, serve breakfast with specialty coffee and set up pantries in and around Manzanillo.

Cahuita

North of Puerto Viejo, beside the national park

North of Puerto Viejo, Cahuita is a laid-back Afro-Caribbean village next to Cahuita National Park, with its reef and beach trails, where monkeys and sloths are often spotted from the path. It’s smaller and calmer than Puerto Viejo, with deep calypso roots and a proud Caribbean kitchen.

Places to stay include beach houses, cabins and vacation rentals in the village and along the quieter stretches of coast around it, many wrapped in garden and forest.

We cook private dinners, serve breakfast with specialty coffee and set up pantries for rentals in and around Cahuita, so a day in the national park can end with dinner already underway.
